dreamcatcher - 15 to 29 November 2008

dreamcatcher from “moin fhionnúrach - fenor bog” collection cobsThe Index Gallery at Central Library, Lady Lane, is the venue for “dreamcatcher.” The collection includes landscape and abstract paintings inspired by Waterford’s natural heritage; including diverse environments from suburban garden to seascapes.
The most recent pieces have their origin in Fenor Bog Nature Reserve and include paintings in oil, a book of photographs and a collection of sound recordings.

Fenor Bog is recognised as an important example of “alkaline fen.” the thirty-two acre National Nature Reserve includes areas of wet woodland willow and alder, swampy grassland, tussock and wet herb swamp, with a reed bed in the pond.

The gallery is open to the public during library hours and the work will be on display from 4pm on Saturday 15th November and continues until the 29th. exhibition info

NullarborUnfamiliar Territory” , Exhibition at Foley's on the Mall in Lismore, Co. Waterford, based on travel sketchbooks, this solo exhibition coincided with the Immrama Travel Writer's Festival and continues until the end of June.

The abstract pieces, influenced by the artwork of desert artists in Western Australia, are a visual journal recounting the 5000km journey across the desert and outback. Strong colour and abstract images depicting the expedition by car contrast with the soft tones of oil paintings based on sketches made during walking expeditions in Tuscany and Ireland.

Blue Mountains“We have all experienced reaching that point when traveling where there are too many cathedrals, shops, castles or vineyards. Staccato memories superimposed on each other like transparencies; perspective flattened; boundaries blurred. When in unfamiliar territory we filter out noise, heat and colour or risk being overwhelmed by it. Stopping to sketch an unfamiliar landscape, to study lines and contours, search for a definable motif and distil visual information enriches my memory of the place. In the studio I may not totally recall all the features of a landscape but the feel of the place or time is strong. Abstractly expressing what was a journey into unfamiliar territory.” exhibition info
