The energy of late spring, heat in the earth a mature woodland can support a host of bulbs, they multiply like a carpet and exclude all other plants. However they flower for only a short time.
They represent the fullness of spring and it overflows in to summer, the tradition of May Day is significant in many cultures. Up close – each flower is visible individually but at a distance they become a haze of light.
The colour is affected by the dappled light, pale green leaves that are not yet open provide light shade, the bluebells are the last colour before the tree canopy reduces the light levels and only hardier scrubs can survive, the thick blanket of leaves prevent other plants from developing, the create their own micro environment, the sea of bluebells is the natural expression of the plant. The concept of expressing yourself naturally is important.
